Long story ahead..... and why this yarn is so special to us.
Earlier this year, an old friend from university, Alannah, was diagnosed with Grade 4 Cancerous Brain tumor, also know as Glioblastoma Multiforme. This is a very rare incurable cancer and was told she has only a 50% chance of surviving past 2 years. Alannah was also informed that this type of cancer was mostly found in older people, not someone in their early 30's. She's undergone an awake craniotomy, over 30 sessions of radiotherapy sessions and has been enduring the hardship of chemo since summer.
And Alannah has three beautiful children, the oldest five, the youngest just turned one. I don't know where Alannah finds the strength, courage, humour, determination to battle this with such grace, wit and honesty. But she does, and she has absolutely inspired all of us here in the studio with her daily instagram posts and stories. Alannah and her family have set up a gofundme to help them. The money raised will help Alannah fund future treatments to prolong her life. Alannah’s only wish is for more time with her beautiful family. Time to make memories.
I reached out to Alannah and asked her if she would like to collaborate on a mill yarn, and all profits would go to her gofundme. She sent me beautiful imagery by artist Aykut Aydoğdu, which I've included in this newsletter. I hope we did this inspiration justice...
We started with a dark dark blue black, and at the carder mixed a whole bunch of colours in with it - golden yellows, rusted oranges and browns, deep teals, crimsons and soft heather purples. What resulted was a moody yarn, a yarn that enticed you to view it more closely. When you really inspect it, you see a world of colour.
We have a limited amount of this yarn, a little over 100 skeins. It's a DK weight, approx 250 - 260m per 100g skein.
I am working on a hat pattern for this yarn, which I hope to release mid December all going well, and will have a wee little KAL too for it. Pattern will be free and I will email with a link to download your copy.
Cor is our DK weight yarn, spun here in our mill in Co. Cavan, Ireland. With a beautifully plump handle, and a buttery feel this yarn is next to skin soft and robust enough for intricate stitch motifs. It is light, soft and lofty, dyed in the wool with soft heathered colour transitions.
PLEASE NOTE, WHILE ALL THIS MILL YARN HAS BEEN DYED IN ONE "DYE BATCH', THERE WILL BE STILL BE SOME SLIGHT CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE SKEINS AS HOW THE FIBRE MIXED AND STRETCHED AT THE SPINNER GIVES THE YARN ITS FINAL LOOK. Thanks!
